How to protect yourself from cowboy roofers

Cowboys need not apply!

The DCM team has been concerned lately about reports doing the rounds of shoddy builders and roofing companies. To help protect our clients (and their friends and family) from cowboys, we have put together these handy hints.

How to recognise a cowboy

Qualifications. Check that your contractor is a Licenced Building Practitioner. LBP’s have been assessed as competent to carry out residential building work. You can also check their name on the register.  https://www.lbp.govt.nz

Membership. Look for membership status. (DCM are members of the Roofing Association and the NZ Home Heating Association). Your builder could be a member of the NZ Certified Builders Association.

Materials. Ask questions about the products being suggested. Does the company have supplier affiliations (and are pushing certain products)? Are there are any manufacturers warranties on materials?
Materials you can trust: Colorsteel NZ and ColorCote NZ.

Guarantees. Sometimes problems arise, the difference is in how they are dealt with. Will your contractor stand by their (and their team or sub-contractors) workmanship?

Health & Safety. Check that your contractor has health and safety top of mind. Look to see if they are members of Site Safe NZ or HazardCo.

Reputation. It is important to choose a reputable contractor. Does your contractor have a good track record? Often the length of time in business is a good indicator.

Shout out! A big thank you to our trusted suppliers and the contractors we work with to complete our projects. Thanks too to all our clients who have faith in our delivery, plus thanks to the extended DCM team for going that extra mile!
